Summer at the Association

The Association, its Provo Reservoir Canal Enclosure Project contractor, Ames Construction, the seven cities in northern Utah County and Utah County are all busily preparing the last-minute details for the enclosure project to begin in October.  Association staff and the contractor are working on such issues as pipe fabrication, the submittal approval process, working with the cities to approve traffic plans and utility relocations.  The Association, Utah County and Ames held three open houses to discuss the project.  The open houses were well attended and those who attended seemed to enjoy them.

Association maintenance crews are performing the routine chores normally done on canals and diversions during the summer.  These chores include maintenance of roadways, fences and equipment.  They also do weed and pest control to improve safety along the canal rights-of-way.

Spring Runoff

Many people have been affected by the unusual and fast high water from this year’s runoff. The Association’s staff, along with people from adjacent cities or neighborhoods, have worked around the clock at times to prevent or mitigate the effects of flooding waterways. The Association’s particular thanks go out to the people of Oakley, who helped keep the Weber-Provo Diversion clean and operating. Other neighbors have been very helpful by calling and letting us know of areas of concern along river or canal banks. We appreciate the many watchful eyes. The unusual runoff season of 2010 allowed everyone involved to learn new things about flood preparation and the operation of these water systems. At the end, all the reservoirs are full as we begin the summer irrigation season.

The Provo Reservoir Canal Enclosure Project is gaining momentum. A large amount of the steel coil has arrived at the pipe manufacturing plant in Pleasant Grove. The manufacture of test pipe has begun. The work of reconstructing SR-92 in Lehi along the Provo Reservoir Canal continues. Canal crossings at SR-92, 1200 West and Center Street have been completed.

75th Anniversary Open House

The Association celebrated its 75th Anniversary this year with a special open house held on June 8, 2010.  Guests included federal, state and local officials, shareholder representatives, present and former members of the Board of Directors, present and former employees, water district representatives, consultants, contractors, and neighbors.  To commemorate its 75 years the Association displayed a specially woven afghan (pictured below).  The event was well-attended and the Association would like to express its appreciation to all of the individuals and communities that have helped it attain this milestone.  Thank you – we look forward to another 75 years!

The Association is Busy on Three Fronts

The 2010 spring runoff is coming on a month late but trying to make up for lost time.  The water levels and flow rates have picked up dramatically over the past few days.  Crews are watching the action at the Provo River above Jordanelle Reservoir, keeping the flows in check on the Weber-Provo Canal, and expecting the flows on the Duchesne River to pick up even more as the temperatures continue to rise.

The work of preparation for the Provo Reservoir Canal Enclosure Project is also ramping up.  The pipe manufacturer, Northwest Pipe, is preparing its machinery to manufacture the approximately 2800 sections of 10.5’ diameter steel pipe.  Dovetailing with this project, the northern Utah County cities and Utah County, along with the Utah Department of Transportation, are preparing to let the contract to design and build the trail that will go along the enclosed canal.

Finally, the Association is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this summer.  The official celebration will be at the Pleasant Grove site, which is located at 285 West 1100 North, Pleasant Grove.  The celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.  Anyone who is interested is welcome to come and visit.
